Wetherspoons chef among cast for Jayde Adams’ new sitcom

By Betty Woolerton  Tuesday Jan 24, 2023

The cast has been revealed for Jayde Adams’ new sitcom inspired by her years spent working in a Stokes Croft call centre – and it includes an unknown Wetherspoons chef from just outside Bristol.

In October, Jayde put out an appeal seeking fresh new talent from within Bristol to audition for the six-part comedy series, called Ruby Speaking.

The ITVX show follows Ruby, played by Jayde, and “her ragtag bunch of colleagues” at fictional call centre Hellocom in the customer service department.

The series, which is being filmed in the city, sees Ruby deals with her own misfortunes while also navigating other people’s issues, often putting them before her own job.

Through the casting call, Jayde recruited Dan Hiscox, who plays Craig, and Kiera Lester, who plays Melons.

Hiscox was a chef at a Pucklechurch Wetherpoons before landing the role and Lester trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, already appearing in BBC’s Chloe, Bristol Old Vic’s the Meaning of Zong and ITV’s Grace.

Speaking in December just after finding Hiscox, Jayde told Bristol24/7: “When he came in I was like ‘who is this?’. He’s a star.

“We had two roles that we wanted to fill that way and when he came in I felt like Simon Cowell when Paul Potts came on stage. He works in a Wetherspoons near Pucklechurch, he calls me ‘our Jayde’.

“I just couldn’t believe that I’m the one who gets to launch him into the industry: the world is going to adore him.”

Jayde added: “We had to really push for that call out, as it was an expense for us as we have quite a small budget.

“What am I doing for my platform? Am I sending the ladder back down? Yes I am.”

Filming for Ruby Speaking has just begun with Jayde posting a photo of the cast chosen for the comedian and actor’s series.

Also starring the show is familiar Bristol face Joe Sims who plays Tom, as well as Katherine Kelly as Vicki, Sam Swainsbury is Mark, Jamal Franklin as Cameron, Nicky Goldie is Donna and Amy-Leigh Hickman plays Ellie.

Produced by Yellow Door Productions, Ruby Speaking will be directed by Bristol-based Rosie Gaunt-Mathieson (Just Delivered) and is written by Abigail Wilson (Ten Percent).

It is due to air in 2023.
