Where was The Outlaws filmed in Bristol?

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Oct 19, 2021

The Outlaws is still filming its second season in Bristol days before its first episode airs on BBC One.

Rownham Mead in Hotwells is the latest filming location for the comedy-thriller which has also seen everything from shoplifting in The Galleries to Christopher Walken having a pint at the George Inn in Shirehampton.

The Bristol A-Z map has been well-thumbed with shoots everywhere from the A Bond warehouse to the Wills Memorial Building, Avonview Cemetery in St George to Welsh Back in the city centre.

The production was only 12 days into shooting series one when everything had to shut down due to the first national lockdown.

Everything was originally planned to be shot on location without the need to build any sets at all, but after season two was commission the decision was made to build most locations at the Bottle Yard Studios in Hengrove.

“The Bottle Yard Studios and Bristol Film Office could not have been more flexible and more supportive to our ever-changing circumstances,” said The Outlaws producer Nickie Sault. “I would return to shoot in Bristol in a heartbeat.”

Senior Bristol film manager, Laura Aviles, said: “So often Bristol doubles for other settings on screen. It’s rarer that the city has the chance to star as itself, in all its vibrancy and colour.

“Viewers that know and love Bristol are in for a treat. The Outlaws is as Bristolian as they come, with the city taking centre stage.”

Aviles said that The Outlaws “has been a vitally important production for Bristol”, generating jobs for crew and associated income for other sectors.

Around 200 people per day were working at the Bottle Yard throughout the production of series one, with an estimated 70 to 75 per cent of crew from Bristol and the surrounding area.

The Bottle Yard Studios was home to sets including the house of Margaret, daughter of small-time crook Frank played by Christopher Walken; the offices of family business Halloran & Son; the probation offices where the seven outlaws meet; and police cells and interview rooms

Bristol Film Office advised the production team on charities and community groups that would welcome donations in return for the patience and cooperation of residents. Donations have now been made to the Sea Mills Community Initiative Charity, Sea Mills & Coombe Dingle Climate Action Group, the Friends of Sea Mills Library and Dove Street Friendly Neighbours Group.
