Who will you be voting for on Thursday?

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Jun 6, 2017

We asked people across Bristol’s four constituencies who they will be voting for in this week’s General Election:

Bristol North West

Basil Lewis, 60, self-employed garage owner, Horfield

“We need Labour back in because the Conservative government are really killing the people, they are crucifying the people. The election gives Labour a chance to get back in again.”

Emily Cressey, 33, restaurant supervisor, Gloucester Road

“I’ll vote Labour because I don’t like the Conservatives. I just don’t really think the Tories look after the people in the middle.”

Anna Emmerton, 44, trained as a designer, Horfield

“Normally I would vote Green, but maybe this is a bit more important so I’ve got to go and have a think about it. Housing, the hospitals and homelessness are all concerns in Bristol.”

Rikky Sweet, 25, Forestry Commission employee, Southmead

“Seems like a cynical attempt to grab onto the weakness of the Labour party. From a socialist Labour standpoint, I think the election will be pretty awful for the public.”

Kudi Matadi, 20, student, Frenchay

“I’m quite mixed about it, it’s happened quite quickly so there’s not much time to really think about it. I’m voting Labour. I don’t trust Theresa May.”

Rachel Moffat, 34, full-time mum, Horfield

“I think it was slightly opportunistic calling the election now – a bit devious. Education is a huge issue in Bristol for me and affordable housing.”

Kufi Ibrahin, 18, student, Bedminster

“I’m not really bothered because it’s boring. I’ve never voted before and I’m just going to vote for whoever my mum votes for.”

Shaun Way, 45, unemployed due to physical disability, Bedminster Down

“I feel there’s nothing I can do, I’m just getting on with my life doing what I want to do for myself. My life is all about independence after my accident.”

Robert Hicks, 44, carer, Bedminster

“I’m a Labour supporter. I don’t believe they’ve got any chance of winning due to their leader, I think the man’s unelectable and the Labour Party’s gone too far to the left.”

Daniella Willey, 22, unemployed, Bedminster

“Theresa May has already been elected so she should see us through Brexit. She said she wanted to be Prime Minister so she should do her job.”

Aalayah Williams, 19, student, Knowle

“I personally won’t vote. My vote just doesn’t seem like it’s getting anywhere. I think the election is bad because there’s no need for it.”

Margaret Harris, 66, retired, Hartcliffe

“I’ve voted Labour all my life so I’m probably going to vote Labour this time. I’ve worked all my life and then multiple sclerosis hit me and I was left in a wheelchair, Labour’s always done well for me.”

Bristol West

Louella Frankel Jones, 69, artist, Bishopston

“I wish it hadn’t been called when it was and I’m very concerned that the Tories might get back in, because I think they are doing a huge amount of damage to this country.”

Harriet Wylie, 29, waitress, Montpelier

“The election shouldn’t be happening. It’s just happening to prove a point, which is stupid. I will be voting Labour but I don’t hold out much hope.”

Richard Howerth, 49, kitchen planner, Cheltenham Road

“There’s so much going on, you can be a bit blinded by it all. The election is probably a good thing in a way, it keeps people on their toes.”

Angus Foster, 21, student, Clifton

“It just seems like it’s really far right, or far left. There’s no sort of in between. Far left’s great in an idealist kind of way, but whether it’s practical for this country, I’m not really sure.”

Tricia Bailey, 21, office worker, Montpelier

“I’m mostly a bit worried about the election. I think the Conservatives have done it because they want to get a bigger majority and not because they want to give the people an opinion.”

Nick Wilkins, 48, chef, St Werburgh’s

“I don’t really care about politics, I’m just a product of the system really. Thangam Debbonaire did help me out a lot so if I do vote it’ll be for her.”

Bristol East

Elaine Russell, 80, retired, Brislington

“I do not really know what to say about the General Election. At the moment I think it will be Labour who I will vote for, as I always have.”

Stuart Burgess, 53, university lecturer, Brislington

“I think the General Election is a good thing. With Brexit, I think it’s good for Theresa May to get a mandate for her position.”

Richard Hudson, 54, mechanic, Fishponds

“I don’t even know what date the election is. I think the press and TV decide who wins more than the policies anyway but I’ve not really given it much thought.”

Malika Herbert, 41, self-employed, Brislington

“I think it’s a good thing an election has been called. We do not want Theresa May to win, we want the NHS. They are going to destroy the whole world if they remain in power.”

Chris Farnish, 26, support worker, Brislington

“Since the Tories have been in control, life has got worse for the working person. The Labour Party care about the NHS which is a big thing for me.”

Gillian Hooper, 59, not in work, Fishponds

“I’m not happy the election has been called. I’ve not yet decided if I’m voting. I want Labour in power because they will look after the NHS.”
