Windmill Hill City Farm Community veg box scheme returns

By Mia Vines Booth  Thursday Jul 21, 2022

A popular community veg box scheme is relaunching this year after a successful run in 2021.

Windmill Hill City Farm initially set up the scheme help tackle growing food insecurity, and is relaunching at a time where food insecurity is an even more pressing issue for many people living in Bristol.

Incorporating a diverse selection of fresh, local veg, the scheme is designed to make access to healthy produce as easy as possible, at a time where healthier ingredients are becoming less affordable to families across the UK.

Each box contains six different varieties of fresh veg, salad and herbs, which are harvested weekly from Windmill Hill City Farm, and their new market gardens at Hartcliffe City Farm, which reopened to the public in June this year.

Users will be able to choose what they’d like to pay or get a box for free if they are unable to access enough food for themselves or their families.

There is also a standard price option, a low-cost option and options for those that can afford it, to buy a box for someone in need.

Last year, Windmill Hill City Farm provided over 40 free and low-cost boxes to local people who needed them.

Organisers hope they can increase this number this year, and are confident that the added capacity of Hartcliffe City Farm will provide far more vegetables ready to harvest, for local families to enjoy all summer.
