Work begins to build new cycle lane on Bristol Bridge
Cones were being put in place by workmen in hi-vis orange trousers and yellow jackets on Monday morning ahead of construction work on a scheme that aims to make travelling across Bristol Bridge easier for pedestrians and cyclists.
The £1.4m project is due to be completed in October.
Works will include:
is needed now More than ever
- removing the traffic signals and installing a parallel crossing for pedestrians and cyclists linking Castle Park to Baldwin Street
- installing a new zebra crossing across Baldwin Street
- building a two-way segregated cycle lane on the west side of the bridge
- installing a bus shelter on Baldwin Street
- improving the public realm on Baldwin Street and Castle Park either side of the new parallel crossing
The city council say that “since the bus gate was introduced in 2020, which restricts general traffic and prioritises buses, the road layout and traffic signals on Bristol Bridge are no longer appropriate with the reduced traffic flow”.
This is what crossing Bristol Bridge looked like the day before works began:
Bristol Bridge will remain open throughout the works, except for limited night time closures towards the end of the project to resurface the road.
Temporary pedestrian crossings will be in use throughout the works.
If plans for Victoria Street are approved by Bristol’s cabinet, the two-way segregated cycle lane could be extended from Bristol Bridge through to Temple Way, with work potentially starting in 2024.
