Work begins on second bridge tower
The second stage of restoration works on the Clifton Suspension Bridge has begun, signalling the start of a series of delays and closures.
The tower on the Leigh Woods side of the bridge is being cleaned and mortar is bring re-pointed while repairs are being made to the roof structure.
Works on the tower on the Clifton side were completed in 2015, after a detailed inspection revealed that the walls of the towers and the red sandstone abutments that support them were in need of repair work.
is needed now More than ever
The latest work began on Monday February 29 and will continue throughout the summer. The closures will be from 9.30am to 4.30pm, with pedestrian access still available.
But when scaffolding is being erected the bridge will be closed to vehicles and cyclists for three days, from March 14.
Work repainting girders on the underside of the bridge also require the foot way to be lifted, meaning the bridge will have to be closed to pedestrians for several months this year.
David Anderson, bridge master, said: “It is unfortunate that the bridge will not be looking its best again this summer due to the scaffolding obscuring one of the towers.
“However the works must be done during the summer months because warm temperatures are needed for the re-pointing and painting works.”
