Work gets underway to build 13 serviced apartments on harbourside
Construction work is underway on a prominent six-storey development by Wapping Wharf.
The plans to build 13 serviced apartments on land next to The Quays just off Cumberland Road were initially refused due to concerns about “unacceptable noise and disturbance” in a relatively quiet part of the harbourside and the impact on trees in the area.
But permission was granted on appeal and the developers behind the project say they are seeking to transform a currently derelict patch with an “important new addition to the skyline”.
is needed now More than ever
The development by Simon James Homes will incorporate 13 serviced apartments that will provide a ‘home-away-from-home’ for visitors to Bristol city centre and are intended to be let on a short-term basis, according to planning documents. There will also be an underground car park.

The developer envisions that those staying in the new homes – to be named Dockside Apartments – will likely be professionals visiting the city for work, or tourists on a short city break.
The plans met with more than 150 objections, with concerns including the use of the site, the design and impact on the conservation, effect on residential amenity and highway safety concerns.
Giving reasons for allowing the development on appeal, the planning inspectorate stated there was no evidence to suggest the plans would generate the feared levels of noise and disturbance – nor would it negatively impact upon the character and identity of the area.
Speaking after the groundbreaking ceremony this week, Simon Crocker, the managing director of Simon James Homes, said: “It’s fantastic to break ground at Dockside Apartments and start work on a stunning new addition to the thriving harbourside area of Bristol.
“This is an extremely well-considered development, and we’ve already been working with John Perkins Construction for more than a year to ensure the development can stand proud amid the harbourside skyline.”
John Perkins Construction, the firm that will be building the new apartments, have worked on a number of projects in the city, including the restoration of Underfall Yard.
