Work in Bristol park complete – but lake remains out of bounds
High fences remain in place to prevent people from walking around the path next to the lake in St George Park.
Major refurbishment work has finally been completed and contractors and vehicles moved off the site but the area remains out of bounds due to hot weather causing a delay in refilling the vast lake.
The area was closed in November for the £400,000 project to improve the area, which included the introduction of a new boardwalk on the Victorian lake so children can watch wildlife and take samples of water to learn about nature and conservation.
is needed now More than ever
Work was initially expected to take six months and the latest signs state the lake area will reopen at the end of July.
But Bristol Parks has now confirmed the reason for the delay.
In a Tweet, the council’s parks department said: “We have completed the improvement works to St George Park lake but ask that people please have patience while the lake refills.
“The hot weather means the lake is taking longer than usual to fill, and we want to ensure the wildlife in the area is undisturbed while this process takes place. When the lake is fully reopen to residents, we’ll let you know.”
Part of the work involved removing and rebuilding the existing lake edge wall in stages, as well as repairs to the footpath. The plan was to use silt from the lake to make new wetland areas for wildfowl, frogs and newts and insects.

Visitors to St George Park will also be able to see the early formation of a new natural amphitheatre for outdoor performances, which is being created on the Church Road side of the lake.
