Transformation of Temple Gate to begin
One of the main routes into Bristol city centre is set to be completely transformed.
Temple Gate roundabout will become a crossroads with more direct routes and fewer traffic lights, while the roads feeding into it will see more space dedicated to buses, cyclists and pedestrians.
is needed now More than ever
Work is due to start in January 2017 and last until spring 2018.
Off-carriageway cycle routes will keep cyclists and pedestrians separate in some places but in the future they will be able to enjoy totally segregated routes.
It’s the latest plan for an area which once had a flyover that was often compared to a giant Skalextric track:
The £11 million project will eventually stretch from Old Market Roundabout to Bath Bridges.
A public square and new buildings will also be built, hopefully leading to a new future for the derelict Grosvenor and George & Railway hotels.
Bristol City Council cabinet member for transport, Mark Bradshaw, said: “The Temple Gate area is an important gateway to the city but has lacked investment and a comprehensive approach to making it work and look better.
“This work is an important first step towards creating the kind of gateway and transport hub around the station that the city deserves.”
