Works underway to improve safety on ‘dangerous’ corner in St George
Long-awaited work is finally underway to improve safety on a notorious corner that has been branded a danger to pedestrians.
The footpath on the sharp bend as Conham Road becomes Crews Hole Road is due to be widened on the river side and extended on the other, where a high wall and vegetation currently mean there is no visibility for crossing.
A kerbed edge and bollards will be added to the side of the road to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists crossing between the River Avon Trail and pathway leading to Conham River Park. The road will be widened slightly to accommodate the additional pavement.
is needed now More than ever
Part of Conham Road from the bend will be closed to vehicles for two weeks while works take place. Pedestrians and cyclists can currently still use the popular route.
The work follows a consultation on the proposals, launched earlier this year. It comes after earlier plans to make Conham Road one way and install a cycle lane were rejected as it was deemed the measures would have left the area cut-off in bad weather.
Fabian Breckels, a Labour councillor for St George, Troopers Hill, says: “This is a scheme I have been lobbying for after constituents approached me about the dangerous crossing at this point.
“We were able to secure over £30,000 to improve the crossing and during the 2020 lockdowns, I was meeting with officers virtually to draw up a scheme that would work for the money. This went out to consultation in January 2021 and was amended following feedback, but it has taken this long to get contractors on the site for a variety of reasons, meaning I have had to chase officers, including through the mayor’s office to get the job done.
“What’s great about this scheme, which will improve pedestrian and cyclist visibility on both side of the road, is it’s easy to upgrade with a speed table, whenever funds allow.”
