Young chef launches sustainable food blog
Writing a masters dissertation, working at Windmill Hill City Farm, and running a sustainable food blog are just a few of the things keeping Alex Montgomery busy, as Bristol24/7 found out over a Pinkman’s coffee and doughnut.
Alex, 24, took part in Bristol24/7 and Square Food Foundation’s How to be a Chef course earlier this year. He’s now busy sharing the tips and tricks he learnt about how to cook and eat sustainably with his followers on Instagram, via his blog 50 ways to cook.

Alex, who also volunteers at Square Food Foundation, said: “I’m a passionate home cook turned chef currently studying for an MSc in Sustainable Development. My passion for good food and the environment has been a recurring theme throughout my life.
is needed now More than ever
“Over lockdown, I wanted a way to document my cooking adventures, and 50 Ways To Cook was the result.”
Alex started 50 ways to cook as a bit of fun with his housemate, but after taking part in the How to be a Chef course, he saw a career opportunity and started taking his Instagram account more seriously.
Now working as a chef at Windmill Hill City Farm, Alex credits the How to be a Chef course as a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the Bristol food scene.
Alex’s vision for 50 ways to cook extends far beyond Instagram.
“My vision for 50 Ways To Cook is to encourage sustainable behaviour change by providing tips and recipes to help people take small actionable steps to become more mindful and sustainable in the kitchen.”
Alex’s three top tips to help people to achieve this are:
1. Waste less food
2. Eat less meat
3. Eat the best quality food you can afford

“I want to inspire people to get into the kitchen and become more connected to our food systems. Over the next few years, I plan to grow a community of people interested in eating more sustainably. But I have a broader vision of setting up an organisation providing events such as sustainable supper clubs and educational workshops.”
