My Bristol Favourites: Allie Dunnington

By Bristol24/7  Sunday Sep 3, 2017

Dr Allie Dunnington is a hot air balloon pilot, travel writer and photographer. On September 14 at the Bristol Improv Theatre in Clifton, she will be presenting a showcase of her aerial images and stories of flying balloons in Burma. Click here to book tickets.

Here are Allie’s top-five Bristol favourites, which all happen to be pubs:

The Nova Scotia, Hotwells
“Recalling the days when this was the last pub Bristol’s world-conquering sailors visited before reaching the New World. It’s very much a ‘local’ and with beautiful dockside tables. Good value food anytime except Sunday evening.”

Eldon House, Clifton
“One of Bristol’s best (free) music venues. There is a great stage in the bar and a wide range of high quality bands. Their Sunday lunch is also exceptional.

The Miners’ Rest, Long Ashton
“An undiscovered gem with views towards Nailsea valley. This pub is another ‘local’ with an old-fashioned style including cash-only payment! It served the coal mines which were spread through Somerset until the 1950s.

The Highbury Vaults, Kingsdown
“This has been unchanged for decades. It has a model railway running through its two bars, a limited but reliable daily menu, and prides itself on looking after its beers.”

The Portcullis, Clifton
“This is another tiny good beer pub on two floors with a narrow terrace. Good food most days.”
