My Bristol Favourites: Briony Waite

By Bristol24/7  Saturday Nov 11, 2017

Theatre director Briony is directing a production of The Provoked Wife with Stepping Out Theatre at Kings Weston House from November 14 to 25.

A Heritage Lottery Fund project, the play is being performed in the very house that the playwright himself designed. The Provoked Wife was penned by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1697, one of several plays written before he switched careers and became an architect instead. Kings Weston House is one of his designs, as is Blenheim Palace.

Stepping Out Theatre is a charity that helps people experiencing mental illness. Founded in 1997, the company has helped thousands of mental health service users, empowering them to connect with the arts and the wider community.

Here are Briony’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Kings Weston House

“Designed by playwright and architect Sir John Vanbrugh in the early 1700s, the beautiful Grade I-listed Kings Weston House is a real hidden gem. And of course the perfect place for Stepping Out to perform an updated and immersive version of Vanbrugh’s comedy The Provoked Wife. We are really playing with and exploring how theatre and architecture go together and it’s lots of fun.”

Tobacco Factory Theatres

Tobacco Factory Theatres really is an inspirational space for actors and audiences alike. I love the fact that its presence on North Street has transformed the entire area. Its fascinating how theatre can revitalise neighbourhoods.”

Brasserie Blanc

“This is absolutely my favourite eatery in Bristol. I like the simplicity of the cooking and love the ambience of the building. Brasserie Blanc is a former Quaker meeting hall and they have kept the space beautiful with understated elegance.”

Clifton Village

“With its glorious Georgian architecture, the Avon Gorge and Brunel’s suspension bridge, all nestling into the fabulous greenery of the Downs. In the photo at the top of this page I am standing outside one of my favourite town houses, featuring a pink door where I am watering the hanging basket with a pink flamingo watering can, which sums up Clifton for me.”

The harbourside

“Bristol has changed so much over recent years and it is wonderful to have lived here and watched the transition. One of the biggest transformations is the harbourside. To take a working docks and turn it into a vibrant centre and hub of activity is incredible. It’s now a place where people go and have fun and relate to water. It particularly comes into its own when the sun shines – the whole place comes alive.”
