My Bristol Favourites: Danielle Greenwood
Danielle Greenwood grew up in El Paso in Texas on the border of Mexico and now lives in Bristol, selling her art as Viva Los Muertos. With a group of friends, Danielle recently helped create a traditional Day of the Dead altar at Arnos Vale Cemetery. She also created a Day of the Dead-inspired window display at Room 212 on Gloucester Road, where many of her artworks are for sale.
Here are Danielle’s top-five Bristol favourites:
B-Bee’s Craft & Farmers Market
is needed now More than ever
“B-Bee’s Craft & Farmers Market started at the beginning of this year and has just grown in strength and community spirit. It is in the heart of Fishponds with such a great vibe and supports small businesses and makers from all over Bristol. The founders of this market are willing to give everyone a chance at trading which is great for makers who are just starting out and seeking the confidence to share their creations to the public. I have been with this market since it started and have witnessed it transform from just a market to something special with a family feel.”
The Fleece
“Playing a gig at The Fleece with Bad Manners five years ago is what eventually led to me moving here to Bristol. I love The Fleece! The venue has so much history and has hosted so many great bands. It is by far, the best venue in Bristol and we must protect it! There are so many flats being built up around it which threatens its existence. I have seen so many great bands there and hope to see many more for years to come!”
Arnos Vale Cemetery
“I don’t think that there is a soul out there that doesn’t like walks in this magical place. Arnos Vale Cemetery is rich with history, forests, photographic opportunities, and spirit. It’s is a great place to take a stroll in and clear the mind. My son and I love to take walks here and enjoy the beauty and history.”
The Bearpit
“What is not to like about a little round roundabout in the centre of Bristol which has the best of everything. The Bearpit is full of art, culture, diversity and the best burrito in town! If you haven’t had a burrito at Bearritos in the double decker bus then make sure you do. Take it from a Texan, they rock! We co-hosted an exhibition of my art for Dia de Los Muertos on the upper deck of Bearritos a couple of years ago and it was a truly magical feel. The Bearpit has that New York Central Park sort of vibe with all walks of life travelling through it on a daily basis. I love how so many love our city so much that they work so hard to make it better and saving the Bearpit has been a great place to save!”
East Street
“All walks of life live in Bedminster. East Street is still not over gentrified and has some of the best people and shops around. There is a great veg shop that is old school and not over priced. It is the kind of street where loads of people know each other’s names and it is a social hub for many elderly to meet and chat. I love this street because most people don’t. Bristol is great in every way but some places are just so trendy that they have lost the community spirit. East Street is rich in diversity and community. It also hosts a great authentic Mexican restaurant with killer cocktails called Viva La Mexicana. Again, take it from a girl that grew up on the border of Mexico, they rock!”
