Here are Paul’s top-five Bristol favourites:
is needed now More than ever
The Cube
“The first gig I saw at the Cube was Crescent promoting By the Roads and the Fields, a particular favourite of mine. I fell in love with its intimacy as a venue. My favourite Cube screening is Grant Gee’s documentary Patience (After Sebald) about The Rings of Saturn, the book that I most return to.
Guy Denning
“The work of Guy Denning first came to my attention through Bristol’s urban art scene. We became good friends and Guy’s visuals for the North Sea Navigator Make the Blacklist launch at the Cube perfectly mirrored the album’s aesthetic. His visceral, politically charged art is a rare, uncompromising blend of raw honesty and social comment.”
Sleepdogs
“Sleepdogs is a collaboration between director/producer Tanuja Amarasuriya and writer/composer Timothy X Atack. They are compelling storytellers who make transformative art for stage, screen, and radio. The script for Dark Land Light House, which premiered at Bristol Old Vic in 2016, was a catalyst for inspiration when writing this album.”
Watershed
“For me, Watershed is an important nexus between film and music. It’s the place where I go to escape, to be immersed in Mica Levi’s score for Jackie for example, and come away feeling transformed. It is also provides a perfect space for reflection; a place to hear oneself think.”
Nadine Gingell
“It was only recently that I discovered the work of Bristol singer-songwriter Nadine Gingell, aka Lady Nade. Nina Simone’s Baltimore is one of my favourite albums and Nade’s voice was a revelation to me, so much so that I knew I wanted her to guest on my album. Nade is a rare talent and a joy to work with.”
