East Street Tales
When Hungarian photographer Ibolya Feher goes shopping she rarely leaves the house without her camera.
Living just off East Street, Bedminster she has spent the last few years documenting the characters on her doorstep and she tells Bristol 24/7 about the people who inspire her photography.
is needed now More than ever
“I started to do this a long time ago. When I first moved here I went to ASDA and, as I walked, I saw some really interesting people – big characters and a lot of very interesting life scenarios.
“I started to go out with my camera and started to take pictures.”
“Most of the time people are very positive. I find most of the people in Bedminster to be really nice kind people.
“People love it when people are interested in them and are happy to answer questions about themselves.”
“Sometimes I take candid pictures – I don’t approach people I just take the pictures.
“Then sometimes I may approach the person and, depending on the person and the situation, I go and ask them if I can take their picture as I like something on them – maybe their facial expression, maybe the way they dress.
“Sometimes we work together and I position them and take their portrait.”
“I often just ask people if I can take their picture becasue I really like their hat – there are a lot of really good hats in Bedminster.
“A lot of people put a lot of effort into dressing up in Bedminster. I don’t see it in other parts of Bristol.”
“I find myself going to people who dress differently but that doesn’t give an overall picture of people in Bedminster. So there is a little bit of a dilemma as, being a photographer, I like to be objective.”
Ibolya is crowdfunding to put on an exhibition of her East Street Tales in Bedminster.
