‘I am black Bristol’

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Sep 21, 2016

Bristol is the New Black is an initiative raising awareness of the black people who are shaping life and culture in Bristol.

This may be through campaigning, art, business, or just generally being an interesting person, according to the student organisers of the campaign.

Chante Joseph, a second year University of Bristol student and president of the university’s African & Caribbean Association, said: “BITNB seeks to promote and connect these individuals and their narratives to a wider community of inspiring black people in Bristol.

“To the surprise of many, only 51 home black students graduated from Bristol University in 2015, and though many factors may have contributed to this, we feel that the systematic lack of support and absence of a close-knit community plays a key role.

“The online platform is a way to help students and young people learn about, identify with, and aspire to role models in their own community. It will also be used to ensure that students know how and where to find familiar faces and spaces.

“In the future, the platform will host more events that seek to connect black individuals in Bristol, sparking conversation and creating ideas.”
