Here are Jon’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Roll for the Soul
“Roll for the Soul is a vegetarian and vegan cafe for bike riders and a perfect little music venue. They do lovely coffee and their hummus and falafel wraps with sweet chilli sauce are magical. The Charlie Tipper Conspiracy held our three-day music festival there last year, Rock and Roll for the Soul, which was brilliant! The full length windows create a whole new interaction between band and passers-by.”
A Cappella
“A Cappella in the no man’s lad between Knowle and Totterdown is my favourite pizza place and a BYO as well. Try the allegretto, ham and brie topped with an egg. There are lots of veggie options, some fish and great salads.”
Nightingale valley, Leigh Woods
“Follow the path along the south side of the River Avon. Once you’ve gone under the Clifton Suspension Bridge there is a turning on your left, through a tunnel under a railway bridge. When you come out the other side, it’s like finding yourself in Narnia (without the snow queen). Follow the path up and it leads to Intermission, a pop up coffee, ice cream and cake stall. Or was it all a dream I had? You’ll have to try it and see.”
South of the Floating Harbour
“Behind the ss Great Britain lies the ruins of Eplus Studios where my first band The Groove Farm recorded our first records. I personally was involved in the restoration of the railway lines and the Avon Packet building which was taken apart brick by brick in Avonmouth and rebuilt where it stands today. And of course, Brunel’s Buttery with its egg and bacon butties.”
My small and messy room/studio
“This small but bijou room has commanding views of the city and is at the heart of my artistic output. Amps, guitars, keyboards, cables, cameras, empty bottles of bourbon, eight track recording devices, piles of paperwork and half written novels litter this tiny space. It is in fact the closest you can get to being inside my head without actually being inside my head.”
