Let’s talk about sex

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Mar 14, 2018

A sex-positive guide to pornography is the first in a series of new events in Bristol aiming to host inclusive, educational and empowering talks about sex.

The first Sex Talks event with sex educator Ruby Rare will explore “how to use porn as a positive tool to exercise curiosity, explore fantasy in a healthy way, and hopefully present practical ways we can become happier consumers of porn”.

Sex Talks founder Antonia May, 25, moved to Bristol to work in charity PR but has quit her job in the hope of turning her passion into a career.

Sexual wellbeing and health were things that Antonia has been interested in for several years, and her interest grew after reading Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski.

“I became fascinated by the concepts. Why do we see a man’s pleasure being the end goal?”, she told Bristol24/7.

Also seeing similar themes covered in publications such as gal-dem and Rife, Antonia realised that there was nothing in Bristol that was exploring these topics further, so she decided to found her own series of events.

“I really wanted to reassess what I was passionate about” said Antonia, who lives in Redcliffe. “I felt like I was putting my energy into other people’s passions.

“These topic are normal topics for me and my friends but I’m fully aware that not everyone will be interested in this.”

People from across the UK have already contacted Antonia asking if they can speak at one of her events. “They have brilliant stories to tell and I can’t wait to organise something so they can be heard,” she said.

For Antonia, being able to talk openly about pornography is “empowering”.

She added: “I want to be able to talk about sex in more than a cultural way but in a much broader sense. What we’re doing may seem niche but it shouldn’t be, especially here in Bristol.

“If you think about sex as a bedroom thing, you’re thinking about it in such a small way. We’ll cover art, culture, background, activism. It just so happens that the topics stem from sex.”

The first Sex Talks event, Positivity and Pornography, takes place at Hydra on Old Market Street on March 15. The next events on April 5 and May 31 will look at consent and the clitoris, and BDSM. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.sextalksbristol.com/upcoming-events
