My Bristol Favourites: Alan Sweetman

By Martin Booth  Saturday Feb 27, 2021

Alan Sweetman is executive director of Pahar Trust Nepal, a Bristol-based charity that funds and builds schools and other essential projects such as health centres in remote parts of Nepal.

To mark 30 years since the first school was built, the charity has just launched its 30 For 30 campaign which aims to raise £50,000 to help 30 schools in Nepal improve teaching provision and facilities for pre-primary school children aged one to five.

These are Alan’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Disc golf at Ashton Court

“Disc golf was a really important part of life for me during 2020. I used to play a lot when I lived in Sweden but hadn’t done so for many years until last June. It is a great way to meet with a few friends and enjoy social distanced exercise and a little competition. I now try to get out to play at Ashton Court twice a week (government guidelines permitting), even when it is dark – which brings extra challenges!”

Souk Kitchen

“If you give me a choice of where to go out for dinner, Souk Kitchen on North Street is always on the top of the list. It is a wonderful restaurant and they serve amazing Mediterranean and north African inspired food. The zatar flat bread and dips are a delight, and I always come away with new recipe ideas to try out at home.”

Old Sneed Park

Old Sneed Park, once part of a much larger area of land, was enclosed as a deer park in 1274 for the provision of venison for the Bishops of Worcester, to whom the land had been given by William the Conqueror – photo: Friends of Old Sneed Park Nature Reserve

“We have been exploring local green spaces and during 2020, Old Sneed Park Nature Reserve became a firm family favourite for walks. There are wonderful paths to explore with open space, ponds and woodlands that lead down to Bennett’s Patch on the Portway where the whale sculptures (that used to be on Millennium Square outside We The Curious) are now located.”

The Old Duke

“I have really missed seeing live music during the pandemic. Bristol has such a great live music scene I cannot wait until venues are able to reopen again. One of my favourite places to go is the Old Duke on King Street. They have live jazz almost every night of the week with a fantastic atmosphere when packed with people, which seems a long time ago now.”

Ashton Gate Stadium

Fans will hopefully be allowed back at Ashton Gate before the end of this season – photo: Martin Booth

“It’s been oddly quiet at the weekends during the pandemic without the roar of Ashton Gate when Bristol City is playing at home. It is also home to Bristol Bears and I really enjoy being able to see Premiership rugby on a regular basis as a season ticket holder. I am looking forward to when we will be able to attend matches again soon.”
