My Bristol Favourites: Asher Craig
St George West councillor Asher Craig is Bristol mayor Marvin Rees’ lead on equalities and culture. Away from her councillor duties, Asher works as a management consultant and runs her own advocacy service. She is a Rastafarian, a proud mother of three daughters and has lived in Bristol all her life.
Here are Asher’s top-five Bristol favourites:
St Paul’s Carnival
is needed now More than ever
“I have been going to St Pauls Carnival since I was a child. I remember when it was held for many years on the field next to Cabot School, which is now an athletics track. Carnival is a celebration of and a reminder of my Jamaican roots. It’s also a great place to catch up with old friends. I’m always bumping into people I have not seen in years. But let’s not forget the array of colour, great music, great food and just all round great vibes.”
Fi Real
“Bristol’s best kept secret is Fi Real, situated in West Street, Old Market. They take original Jamaican cuisine and serve it vegan style. My favourite dishes are ackee and tofu, with ice & Peas, and jerk tofu and kale with bulgar wheat. But my greatest weakness is their lemon and blueberry cake, and their banana bread with chocolate and pecan nuts is to live for.”
Siam Angel
“Since becoming a councillor, I have spent a lot of time at City Hall. I discovered this lovely little Thai cafe, Siam Angel, which is opposite the car park behind City Hall. There are a few small tables outside and their food is superb. They serve Thai cuisine and full English breakfasts, sandwiches and juices and their prices are very affordable. It’s a great place to have a business meeting or you can just sit on one of the two comfy leather sofas and read the Metro, a book or if you’re boring like me, a report.”
Home/Eastville Park
“When I am not working, which is constantly, I like nothing more than to cook a nice meal, turn on the TV and catch up on some of my favourite programmes. I also love when my daughters come home, we laugh non-stop and just spend valuable mother and daughter time together. I live a stone’s throw from Eastville Park. My sister and I often take walks and jog around the park in an effort to keep fit.”
Redland Green
“I grew up in Redland and the park was one of my favourite places to go and play and just hang out with my friends. It’s full of trees, and woodland and a beautiful expanse of grassed open space. I had a lot of fun and my memories are happy ones. I visited a few weeks ago and it invoked a real feel good factor.”
