My Bristol Favourites: Charlotte Mitchell
Charlotte Mitchell has designed costumes for movies, commercials and several popular TV shows, most recently the second season of the Killing Eve.
After studying fashion and textiles at Central St Martin’s College Of Art, Charlotte went on to have a successful career in buying and design for the fashion industry. She then moved into costume and has been a freelance costume designer since 2005.
Here are Charlotte’s top-five Bristol favourites:
is needed now More than ever
Stoke Park
“My dog Dotty and I love the mix of open meadows and natural woodland on Stoke Park Estate. After walking through Purdown, you can see the big yellow mansion and in the other direction there’s the city skyline. It’s easy to escape the dim sound of the motorway by retreating into the nearby trees, where the newly-added paths lead you to wood carvings and birdsong.”
Poco
“I can always rely on Poco for great food and drink. There’s a restaurant at the back but the front bar is available for walk-ins, which is ideal for when I come home late after filming in London. The menu changes regularly and you can watch the colourful world of Stokes Croft through the window.”
Gloucester Road
“The longest (mostly) independent high street in Europe has a fabulous community. There are plenty of places to buy locally-grown produce, gifts for friends or a treat for myself, as well as clothes and charity shops for when I’m designing a character’s costume and need to find something a bit more unusual.”
Cribbs Causeway
“Although Cabot Circus gets all the attention nowadays, Cribbs is useful for my work. While trying to find multiple items to fit characters, it really helps to have shops concentrated in a single area and a free car park so I can repeatedly load my boot with options. There’s only so much I can carry in one go!”
Grace & Mabel
“Grace & Mabel in Clifton Village has an excellent selection of high-end fashion, including pieces you might not find elsewhere. Sometimes I’ll just pop in for inspiration and end-up with a purchase. They stock a wide range of wonderful European brands, which is perfect for a globe-trotting assassin like Villanelle in Killing Eve.”
