These are Chris’ top-five Bristol favourites:
Greville Smyth Community Bowls Club

“Playing barefoot bowls with friends and drinking bargain pints of Thatchers while balloons fly overhead. There’s no better place to be on a warm summer’s evening than Greville Smyth Community Bowls Club. The volunteers here do a fantastic job to keep it affordable for everyone and to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”
Ashton Gate

“Some of my earliest memories of living in Bristol are going to Ashton Gate with my dad and brother to watch City. I was a season ticket holder for many years and when I was old enough, I sold the matchday programmes where the John Atyeo statue now stands to earn to few quid and get free entrance. It’s great that City decided to stay put and redevelop Ashton Gate rather than move into a new home. It’s now home to both Bristol City and Bristol Bears and brings a lot to south Bristol.”
St Nick’s Market

There is rarely not a queue at Matina – photo: Martin Booth
“When we opened Small Street Espresso nearly ten years ago, I would eat lunch at St Nick’s at least three times a week. When I go back to work there now I always make sure to treat myself. The Glass Arcade has so many delicious options from all over the world. My current faves are the daytime kebabs from Matina and the truly authentic gyoza from Eatchu.”
Bertha’s Pizza

“For me, Bertha’s Pizza is the perfect restaurant. They keep it simple with a few nibbles to start, perfectly charred Neapolitan pizza and homemade gelato. Alongside the classics, they have some more interesting options such as the Middle Eastern inspired lahmacun and the zucca with squash, blue cheese and nduja. The drinks list is concise, yet has something for everyone, and the service is always good.”
Small Bar

Small Bar is a perennial favourite on King Street – photo: Martin Booth
“Bristol’s first and best craft beer bar. Sadly I’m not at Small Bar as often as I used to be, but when I do return it’s always as good as ever. After work it’s always bustling, the staff are super knowledgeable and can always recommend a beer, and the dirty fries with Korean sauce from Wing’s Diner is the perfect accompaniment to a couple of Left Handed Giant pale ales.”
