Donna Speed is the new chief operating officer at We The Curious. She has been at the science centre since it opened as At-Bristol in 2000 and now shares the top job with chief creative officer, Anna Starkey.
Here are Donna’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Gloucester Road

“I love Gloucester Road. It’s got a really strong sense of community and is jam-packed with great places, loads of fabulous independent shops and cafes. Being a mum you can often find us in Totally Toys, which is perfect for birthday presents and always lovely to catch up with Paul, the owner. Other family favourites include Atomic Burger, a retro superhero-themed burger restaurant; and the fabulous family owned ice-cream parlour, called… The Parlour.”
Dame Emily Park

“As part of our new ground floor transformation project at We The Curious, launching in 2020, we are asking people across the city what they are curious about, things that make them really wonder about the world around them. This is a big part of what our new direction is all about. As part of this we did some filming in Dame Emily Park. Everyone was so friendly and had amazing answers! I lived in Bedminster when I first moved to Bristol, and this really reminded me what a special place it is.”
St Werburgh’s City Farm

“St Werburgh’s City Farm is a real hidden gem, a brilliant place to visit and an amazing community project. After a play in the play park we can duck into the cafe – that feels like something out of Lord of The Rings, with its swirling wooden decoration – and get a coffee or an amazing cooked breakfast.”
Everyman

“When me and my husband have a rare date night, we love the Everyman cinema on Whiteladies Road. There are snuggly sofas for two and a cup of tea brought right to your seat, all while watching the latest film!”
Harbourside

“Finally, I couldn’t talk about my favourite places in Bristol without mentioning the harbourside. I have been lucky enough to work in this amazing area for nearly 20 years and have seen it develop in that time from a building site (the At-Bristol redevelopment was one of the first in the area) to a bustling destination for work and socialising. When time allows, I can be found going to Friska, grabbing a takeaway house bacon sandwich, and then sitting on the harbour wall. Or walking across to Wapping Wharf to discover the treasure trove of container restaurants and shops.”
