My Bristol Favourites: Jake Black
Jake Black is co-founder of Bristol Distilling Co, now making gin in Bedminster and opening the bar within their distillery every Friday from 4pm to 8pm. Jake is also the founder of Chomp, which started off as a street food truck before opening a restaurant on St Nicholas Street in the Old City.
These are Jake’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Small Bar
is needed now More than ever

Small Bar: “A handbuilt labour of love, driven by a passion for quality beer and quality breweries”
“There are many craft beer bars now up and down the land but somehow nowhere quite like Small Bar; not that I’ve been to anyway. What this place does have in common with some other Bristol businesses is that it was and remains a handbuilt labour of love, driven by a passion for quality beer and quality breweries. Small Bar on King Street has a laid back vibe, but with friendly and knowledgeable staff who obviously care about what they do. It’s also home to the best fried chicken in the city via Wing’s Diner.”
Pinkmans

Pinkmans: “These guys consistently nail all kinds of pastries”
“Unless something very strange has happened you’ll find me in Pinkmans towards the top of Park Street on a Saturday or Sunday morning – sometimes both. These guys consistently nail all kinds of pastries. But for me, it’s the avocado and sweet chilli with a side of bacon every time. I’m assured by my discerning two-year-old daughter that they also serve Bristol’s best babycino.”
Brandon Hill

Brandon Hill: “By far my favourite green space in the city”
“When aforementioned two-year-old is filled with chocolate brownie and warm frothy milk, it’s time to meander slowly through Brandon Hill. Squirrel spotting followed by hide and seek in the trees and the inevitable swing marathon in the playground at the bottom. It has beautiful views out over south Bristol, and the fact that it always seems to be much quieter and less busy than expected combine to make this by far my favourite green space in the city.”
Windmill Hill City Farm

Windmill Hill City Farm: “Where would parents be without the ability to take a small child to look at pigs rolling around in mud?”
“Windmill Hill City Farm has been the saviour of many a Sunday afternoon. Where would parents be without the ability to take a small child to look at pigs rolling around in mud? Probably in Pinkmans, but you can’t stay there all day. The farm is always well kept and feels welcoming and the animals look healthy and happy. Since the recent upgrade to the cafe it’s also become a great place for coffee and breakfast.”
Woky Ko

Woky Ko: “The flavours are bold and simple, and the consistency is absolutely incredible”
“I used to have a weakness for Wagamama’s yaki soba and ebi katsu. Woky Ko at Wapping Wharf has completely replaced that particular food craving with their Singapore noodles and fried squid. The flavours are bold and simple, and the consistency is absolutely incredible. It might only be a tiny restaurant in a couple of shipping containers, but it delivers every single time.”
