My Bristol Favourites: Joon Lynn Goh
Joon Lynn Goh is the senior producer for In Between Time, the team behind IBT17 Bristol International Festival which takes place from February 8 to 12. She is also an ACE Agent for Change to support South West NPOs exploring organisational change, sits on Citizens UK’s National Refugee Welcome Board and co-chairs the Bristol Syrian Refugee Welcome Committee.
Here are Joon’s top-five Bristol favourites:
College Green
is needed now More than ever
“I seem to spend a lot of time on College Green with others. It’s a site of protest and recognition of how much Bristolians care about this city and their place in the world. The people of Bristol aren’t afraid to stand up for what we believe in and as the world changes we’ll need to be doing this more and more – which is the theme for this year’s IBT festival, ‘Stand Up Stand Out’.
Pasta Loco
“I might be biased because it’s my housemate’s boyfriend’s brother and cousin’s restaurant which opened last year, but Pasta Loco on Cotham Hill is phenomenal and I could eat everything on the menu. I spent my last birthday there and they wrote ‘Happy Birthday Lynn x’ on the menu, a little detail which made me feel very special indeed.”
Knowle West Media Centre
“Knowle West Media Centre is one of those future-facing organisations that are redefining the notion of culture and production from the point of view of the citizen and local resident. We have worked with them a few times at In Between Time; in 2015 we produced Nightwalks with Teenagers, a huge walking performance led by teenagers through the streets of Knowle West and we’re happy to be working with them again as partners for The Record at Bristol Old Vic. I think they are radical and inspiring, and I learn something about how the future can be shaped every time I go there.”
Malcolm X Centre
“The Malcolm X Centre in St Paul’s is home of many extraordinary people, including Bristol Refugee Rights – a hub that offers refugees and asylum seekers a warm welcome with cooked meals, clothes, legal services, English lessons, and friendship. I hope that if I ever flee a country, there will be a community with open arms like this to greet me.”
The Floating Harbour
“I love water and sometimes – when I can – I canoe with my friend Kate in the early morning. You see Bristol from a different perspective. It’s serene and beautiful, and there’s a whole load of eavesdropping that takes place because commuters don’t see you! A load of our IBT shows are taking place this year at Arnolfini, so I will be looking at the harbourside yearningly.”
