My Bristol Favourites: Kayla Painter
The new EP from Kayla Painter, Infinite You, is the biggest release to date from the Bristol musician, who describes it as “an exploration in sonic experimentation, electroacoustic composition, blending the real and the surreal”.
Kayla’s immersive, ever-evolving AV performances have seen her perform at Glastonbury, The Great Escape, Camp Elsewhere and more.
When not making music, she is an associate lecturer at Bath Spa University and a visiting lecturer at numerous other institutions across the South West.

These are Kayla’s top-five Bristol favourites:
The Mothership

“I recently started getting into climbing and bouldering. I joined the Climbing Academy’s The Mothership in Barton Hill and going a few times a week has become a solid part of my routine. I enjoy catching up with friends there and trying to push myself to learn better technique.”
Stoke Park Estate

“Stoke Park is an absolute dream. Apart from its huge open spaces, it has a small fishing pond where you can occasionally see a resident heron and sometimes a kingfisher. I go to Stoke Park to run, to walk, to unwind, or to think out some ideas when I’m creatively stuck in the studio.”
Park Run at Eastville Park

“This year I’ve also started running (it’s been an active year!). I started going to the Park Run at Eastville Park and became hooked. I love rocking up on a Saturday morning and seeing all the hundreds of other runners congregating for the run. It’s the highlight of my week! The community is great and the run goes past the pond which has at least two herons in it most of the time.”
Showcase Cinema

Showcase Avonmeads has a Twitter account dedicated to it, Showcase Avonmemes – photo: Martin Booth
“Avonmeads Retail Park is one of those weird places where some of it is stuck in time (the Showcase) and other parts are more modern. I love the neon signage of the cinema, that the names of the films are displayed in letters manually and that the carpet seems untouched since the 90s. It provides a big nostalgic hit for me!”
Deck Cafe

Deck Cafe serves traditional Hungarian cuisine – photo: Martin Booth
“Deck Cafe on Gloucester Road is my go-to for a takeaway breakfast, to pop in for a cuppa, or to have a cuppa and a slice of cake. All of their food is very tasty and they’re super friendly there too. Once I sat outside in a torrential downpour (because it was some sort of ‘you’re allowed out but not fully out’ lockdown) but it was worth it even while being fully rained on.”
