My Bristol Favourites: Kee Jones

By Martin Booth  Friday Jan 6, 2023

Kee Jones is the new headteacher of Hotwells Primary School.

She was previously assistant headteacher and inclusion lead at the school which received a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted in 2022.

Writing to parents and carers at the end of her first week as headteacher, Kee said that she is “determined to do the very best for the amazing pupils at Hotwells and it is the pupils who will be at the heart of all the decisions that are taken”.

These are Kee’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Maes Knoll Tump

Overlooking Bristol on Maes Knoll Tump

“I absolutely love walking my dog up at Maes Knoll Tump which is an Iron Age hill fort only about five minutes from where I live. The views of both the city on one side and the countryside on the other are simply spectacular, and I love being up there in all weathers – rain or shine. It’s particularly special when out of nowhere a gang of deer charge across the field in front of you! Maes Knoll is quiet, peaceful and a fantastic place to blow away the cobwebs after a busy day.”

Bristol Children’s Hospital

“I recognise that this is a bit of a weird one as a favourite place in Bristol. However, as the parent of a disabled child, I am eternally grateful to have this amazing resource right on our doorstep. When you have a child with significant needs, it means that you will often spend a lot of time in and out of hospital and I am forever thankful for the expertise and care we receive from every doctor, nurse or specialist that we have ever seen at Bristol Children’s Hospital. They are all simply brilliant!”

The Kandyan

The Kandyan is an absolute gem of a restaurant on Gloucester Road where they serve a whole host of delicious Sri Lankan dishes. Eating out with friends is always a treat and every time I go here I like it even more. I’m not one for posh or pretentious places. I always opt for somewhere that has a warm, relaxing atmosphere and Kandyan does just that. The owner could not be more welcoming and loves to show off his cricket bats (which form part of the outside décor) from his semi-professional playing days. It really is a great place serving great food!”

Floriography by Vera Fallacy

“I love this place! Floriography by Vera Fallacy on Wells Road in Totterdown is so special and not like any other florist I have ever been in. The shop is filled with endless trinkets and treasures that you can spend hours looking at along with the most stunning floral arrangements; every single one handmade by Vera herself. Over the years my husband has realised that he can never go wrong with a Floriography bouquet for my birthday. It’s a little tradition that I’m very happy to continue with!”

Redcatch Community Garden

“Over the last five years, I have watched Redcatch Community Garden go from strength to strength. It is now a thriving community space in Knowle which holds a plethora of events and groups and it really has become a hub of the community in a short space of time. Recently I’ve been to a singing workshop held in their wonderful canopy space, a Christmas fair, not to mention eaten the delicious home grown food from Roots cafe. It’s such a great space and always worth a visit.”
