My Bristol favourites: Laura Kidd
Laura Kidd, aka She Makes War, is a “gloom-pop” solo artist who embarks on her first UK headline tour next month, which begins on March 12 at The Old Bookshop. Her third album, Direction Of Travel, is due for release in June.
Here are Laura’s top-five Bristol favourites:
The Bristol & Bath Railway Path
“After more than a decade of taking my chances riding my bike across London it’s a refreshing treat to live somewhere with such great infrastructure for cycling. In my first rush of enthusiasm after moving to Bristol, I rode all the way along the cycle path to Bath. It was fun (and exhausting, and a bit painful) but I think once is enough. Now I use it regularly to zip around to and from the studio and visiting friends. It’s brilliant.”

Matina
“Located at the High Street end of St Nick’s Market, this little stall serves Middle Eastern wraps – halloumi, chicken or lamb – with freshly-made Kurdish naan bread cooked fresh in front of you. I love watching the bread going from stretchy dough to perfect puffy deliciousness in a matter of minutes and it’s a really filling, delicious lunch. I’d eat here every day of the week if I could!”
The Northern Slopes
“A bit of a South Bristol secret, The Northern Slopes are three areas of open green space between Victoria Park and Knowle with breathtaking views across the city. When I moved to the area I had no idea they existed until I stumbled across ‘Bommie’ one day while I was taking my dog for a walk. Now it’s one of my favourite places to have some quiet time and look out all the way to the Suspension Bridge and beyond while Benji runs around enjoying himself. I highly recommend you make a visit.”
The Birdcage
“This cafe / vintage clothes shop / music venue is a cosy, welcoming place to hang out. The staff are always really happy and friendly, the salted caramel hot chocolate is out of this world and it’s a great place for a leisurely Sunday brunch. I need to make a dedicated visit to rummage through their treasure trove of clothes and handmade jewellery soon.”
The Bag Of Nails
“A fine selection of cask ales and ciders, a hilarious list of house rules, a record player in the corner (bring your own vinyl) and a herd of cats wandering around. What more could you possibly want from a pub? Landlord Luke even tweeted at me the other day to entreat me to stop recording music and go and spend the afternoon there. I was sorely tempted, but my new album has to take priority for now.”
