My Bristol Favourites: Olly Kohn
Former Harlequins and Wales rugby player Olly Kohn is co-founder of The Jolly Hog, who produce award-winning meat products as well as owning Pigsty in Wapping Wharf.
The Jolly Hog’s story started in Olly’s kitchen while he was out of rugby action through injury and his wife Ella bought him a sausage making machine.
Olly runs the business with his brothers, Max and Josh, with the trio also owning On The Trot at Bath Spa station and an events business, which during the pandemic has served thousands of bacon and sausage sandwiches to staff at Southmead Hospital.

These are Olly’s top-five Bristol (and a couple of further-afield) favourites:
Lockdown Loaves

“Hannah is one of life’s good guys. We went to the same school (I’m a lot older). The school is a few hundred yards away and she has taken over the bakery that I went to as a kid. Hannah has smashed it since opening Lockdown Loaves in lockdown. The Kohn family and all of the Hog HQ team would go there every other day before we moved offices. Her pastries are next level, her sourdough sells out early every day. She’s building a helluva reputation considering she’s out of town on Winterbourne High Street. If you get a chance, take a drive out there. It’s worth it! But leave early as she sells out quickly.”
Bosco

“Bosco is a go-to for family celebrations for us. Kids love the dough balls and dough nuts. Me and my wife love the arancini. The pizzas are the best in town. It was a treat for us to pick up a takeaway and sit on the Downs to have a feast during the summer months. Oh man, the arancini! How the bloody hell do they get that texture and flavour so perfect?!”
Menu Gordon Jones

“I got given a meal at Menu Gordon Jones in Bath as a birthday present from my mother-in-law. Had no idea what it was going to be like but it was my best meal of 2021! We had the set menu and it blew us away. We sat on a table right next to the kitchen and Gordon talked us through each course. It was a great all round experience. This place is a real treat for special occasions.”
Wild Carrot Cafe

“Wild Carrot is in Chavenage, near Tetbury. I went here with the family over Christmas for a walk, coffee and one of the best slices of cake I’ve ever had. It’s a lovely setting with a good outside set-up. Perfect for walkers and cyclists.”
Seven Lucky Gods

“Seven Lucky Gods is next door to Hog HQ at Wapping Wharf and it’s my guilty pleasure. Ribs, cauliflower and Korean chicken are my go-to here. Filthy, in a great way.”
