My Bristol favourites: Owen Franklin

By Bristol24/7  Saturday Mar 12, 2016

Owen Franklin is founder and director of the inaugural Bristol Film Festival, taking place from March 11 to 13. When not organising film festivals, he enjoys recording cover versions of songs.

Here are Owen’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Independent journalism

Clifton Village

Clifton Arcade

“Yes, it’s got some of the standard chain restaurants that you’d expect. But it’s also home to some characterful pubs – The Portcullis, the Corrie Tap, Amoeba – and independent shops that are well worth exploring. The Clifton Arcade in particular is a hidden gem. And of course, you’re right on the edge of one of Bristol’s beauty spots. The views from the bridge are stunning.”

Bristol Zoo

“It’s more than nostalgia that draws me back here regularly. It’s fascinating to see how Bristol Zoo constantly adapts and alters, as their conservation work expands. It’s also a surprisingly tranquil place to sit and read or write on a weekday in spring provided you find a corner away from the school groups.”

Running paradise

The Pill path along the Avon Gorge

“The Downs, Ashton Court or just up and down the various Avon Gorge paths if you’re feeling particularly healthy. We have some beautiful running and walking routes that can take you from inner city to open countryside in a matter of minutes. It’s one of Bristol’s most unique features.”

Cocktail bars

It’s an open secret that Bristol’s bartending scene is a hot one – still, you usually have to be shown how to reach the bars by somebody in the know… Newcomer Her Majesty’s Secret Service has added its fresh garnish of quirky fun to the mix, but you can’t beat Hausbar for timeless cocktails and smooth operation.

Redcliffe Caves

“I first remember visiting Redcliffe Caves as a child during the Festival Of The Sea – 20 years later and I’m screening horror films in them! I’ve been fortunate enough to be shown around and spend time inside; they’re surprisingly tranquil, and the feeling of being surrounded by history is very powerful. I’m looking forward to having a wander in them before the scary movies start rolling.”
