My Bristol Favourites: Rachel de Garang

By Martin Booth  Saturday Oct 19, 2019

With a 25 year career in the arts sector, Rachel de Garang is founder and artistic director of African Sambistas, a drum and dance group now into its eleventh year running regular workshops and performances.

Rachel will be speaking at The Joy Conference at the Watershed on October 26 about why joy is important, practical and achievable, and why it needs to be prioritised.

The Joy Conference is taking place in support of Smile Train – the international children’s cleft charity which provides free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children born with cleft lip and palate.

Here are Rachel’s top-five Bristol favourites:

The Miner’s Arms

The Miner’s Arms in St Werburgh’s the best Sunday roast in Bristol. Two veggie options with all the trimmings, the largest Yorkshire pudding ever, you can request gravy on the side. £10 and you will be full to the brim, unable to move far or fast. As there is no pre-booking, make sure you get there at 2pm to get a nice seat. The choice of wine is not bad either…”

The mound

“This small hill in St Werburgh’s has the best view over Bristol. Sit in the sun, watch the sunset, moon rise and fireworks with friends or alone. But take a rug or mat as there aren’t many seats.”

Piloxercise

“Their new home at LA Combat in Lawrence Hill is a fun place to exercise, with enthusiastic instructors, friendly faces and a great team spirit all round. I go at least twice a week after work. Free parking in nearby streets makes it even better. If you need motivation to exercise regularly I would definitely recommend Piloxercise.”

The Wardrobe Theatre

“One of the best small spaces to watch and perform theatre. I performed here at the Wardrobe Theatre once which was a fabulous experience. And I’ve seen some amazing shows there too.”

Picton Street Winter Fayre

“This is where my group, African Sambistas, usually perform. I love the twinkly lights, the beautiful stalls, the stage with local musicians and being wrapped up warm against the cold dancing in the streets. This year’s Picton Street Winter Fayre takes place on Saturday, December 14.”
