My Bristol Favourites: Romy Gill
Romy Gill is one of the few female Indian chef/owners in the UK, having opened Romy’s Kitchen restaurant in Thornbury in 2013. She has since been nominated as a BBC Bristol Food Hero, shortlisted for an Asian Women of Achievement Award and as Best Newcomer in The British Curry Awards 2014.
Romy is taking part in two events at the Food Connections festival starting next week, cooking with spices and taking part in a debate on food, culture and identity, both on May 1.
Here are Roy’s top-five Bristol favourites:
is needed now More than ever
Bristol Sweet Mart
“Bristol Sweet Mart on St Mark’s Road in Easton is one of my favourites place to go as you can not only find ingredients from all over the world but the family that owns it is very helpful and friendly. It doesn’t take any one of us to be nice to each other. I feel very at home with them.”
The Bristol food scene
“I am so proud to be part of the Bristol food scene. The food culture is just amazing here. We have some fabulous places to eat and all the chefs are very helpful to each other they are all very good in their own styles of cooking. And from cider to beer to vermouth to gin, we are have some cracking drinks made here as well. I am also so proud of the Food Connections festival which bring all the people in Bristol food culture together. I am honoured to be part of all of this.”
Hart’s Bakery
“I think Laura at Hart’s Bakery is such a talented lady and works so hard, creating wonderful and divine things. She is a very humble person and you don’t get many around these days.”
Gloucester Road food shops and cafes
“The crazily busy road’s food shops and cafes are a nightmare to park near, yet somehow I feel at peace. I seem to spend most of my spare time here buying food and going to eat with my friends.”
Sculpture trails
“I loved when we first had the gorilla hunt, then the Gromits and most recently the Shauns, going around with my daughters. Being a busy mum, I don’t get much time and it was the best way to spend a day.”
