My Bristol Favourites: Saili Katebe

By Martin Booth  Saturday Nov 2, 2019

Saili Katebe is a writer, workshop facilitator and performance poet, who usually writes under the pen name the Blissful Nomad.

As part of this year’s Afrika Eye festival, Saili will be at the SS Great Britain, exploring the experiences of emigration and transition which the ship represents.

He will be performing around the site from Monday, November 4, culminating in an evening featuring spoken word and dance performance on Thursday, November 7.

These are Saili’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Wardrobe Theatre

“My strongest connections to Bristol are the arts, theatre, poetry and performance. The Wardrobe Theatre is one of my favourite theatre spaces to visit and perform in.

Bristol’s poetry scene

“The city is coming alive with its art and voice. There are so many great opportunities and venues giving people the space to find and exercise their voices. From Milk Poetry, Raise the Bar, blahblahblah to small DIY efforts from poets and enthusiasts.”

St Werburgh’s

“St Werburgh’s reminds me of Bristol’s ability to be so many things at once. Walking through the neighbourhood, visiting the city farm, the cafe and the Farm pub keeps me excited to reintroduce myself to the city time and time again.”

Tasty Ragga

“I’m a big fan of good food and familiar faces. Every time I see the red, yellow and green of the Tasty Ragga food truck I know I’m getting that Caribbean goodness and the friendly faces of my good friends.”

Sweat Box Gym

“Before there was theatre and music and poetry and art for me, there was a gym, Sweat Box. The Bedminster club has grown since my earlier visits, but it remains a great space to keep the body and mind sharp.”
