My Bristol Favourites: Savinder Bual
Artist Savinder Bual’s latest exhibition, Javasu, is currently on display at Caraboo in Bedminster.
Savinder was previously the driving force behind The Pineapple Orchestra, a project at the Colston Hall that used music and pineapples to ask challenging questions about the venue’s name change.

Here are Savinder’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Tenovus
“Tenovus on St Mark’s Road is my favourite charity shop in Bristol. I always end up coming home with a bargain after a visit. As it is only charity shop in Easton, all the donations from the community end up here, ensuring a good variety of clothes to choose from.”
The Cube
“The Cube is an independent cinema and arts venue which is run by passionate volunteers. It truly is a gem of a place. I was so excited to discover it when I moved to Bristol. I’ve listened to Indian classical music there and watched experimental film screenings. I would definitely recommend checking out their programme. It’s also the cheapest cinema in Bristol.”
Burger Theory

“Burger Theory is my go-to place if I want some comfort food on a cold winter’s evening. Rory’s Best Ever Veggie Burger is the most delicious veggie burger that I have ever tasted. All the sauces and burgers are homemade; my favourite is the barbecue sauce. Be sure to book if you are not prepared for a half an hour wait at the bar, as this place gets really busy.”
Bristol Wood Recycling Project
“Bristol Wood Recycling Project has made frames and plinths for my most recent work. They are always happy to talk through ideas. They mostly use reclaimed scaffold boards, pallet wood and timber waste such as joists, posts and sheeting. If you would like to buy beautiful furniture made from salvaged wood, then this is the place to go to.”
Renato’s
“I love Renato’s for its friendly atmosphere and the pale ale is cheaper than anywhere else on King Street. They also host the Art Bar, which is a series of talks by artists, curators and creatives on the last Wednesday of every month.”
