Here are Shagufta’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Bristol’s art scene
“Bristol has a real DIY and independent art scene. Many artists work cross-discipline, and it’s really easy to work collaboratively with some amazing artists who are based here. The spoken word scene particularly is very accessible and has a incredibly welcoming community. Hammer & Tongue and Milk being my particular favourite nights in Bristol.”
Food
“After writing, my second passion is EATING! And Bristol has a lot to offer in terms of eateries and food festivals. In fact I am hoping to combine my love of food with poetry in a poetry collection that I am currently working on. While I’m not the must amazing cook, I do enjoy the process of cooking, I find baking really therapeutic. I love shopping at Bristol Sweet Mart for fresh ingredients. I love Jeevan’s for their veggie samosas and Bikkle’s for their awesome Jamaican food. I could easily eat my way through Bristol.”
St Andrew’s Park
“I loved spending time here as a child, and now that I have children of my own, I have started spending more of my summers here. The paddling pool is our personal favourite. It’s such a lovely space.”
St Paul’s Carnival
“St Paul’s Carnival is one of my favourite festivals in Bristol. It has changed a lot in recent years, and has has had funding problems. Which is a real shame because this festival is one of the few that really has such a diverse crowd. It has a long history of being part of the St Paul’s community, and offered something to the communities that couldn’t be found elsewhere in Bristol. “
Secondhand bookshops
“I love browsing through the bookshops on Gloucester Road and Colston Street. You are guaranteed to find a bargain, and there are so many great titles that can be found in these shops. I could spend hours with only a ten pound note, and come out with a bag full.”
