My Bristol Favourites: Stuart Hatton

By Martin Booth  Friday Nov 15, 2019

Stuart Hatton is the managing director of Umberslade, the developer behind Wapping Wharf.

Stuart studied civil engineering at Manchester University before serving in the Army for seven years, rising to become a captain in the Gurkhas and commanding a squadron in Germany.

His move into property came thanks to his wife Jane, with their family company Umberslade founded more than 20 years ago now working across the residential, industrial, retail and commercial sectors.

Here are Stuart’s top five Bristol favourites:

Bristol Old Vic

Bristol Old Vic’s new foyer

“I love everything about it: the amazing history, the intimacy of the theatre itself, the theatre school and much more. It’s a real gem of the city’s arts scene.”

Veals

“As a fisherman, I’m a regular at Veals, a family-run shop, based within Gardiner Haskins. You can be sure you’ll get great advice and they always have what I need.”

St Nicholas Market

The Hot Sauce Emporium at St Nick’s

“St Nick’s has such a warm, quirky feel and I’m a big fan of independents – in particular I like to stop by the hot chilli sauce shop!”

Stationery World

“Since I was a little boy I’ve always liked this type of shop. I love all the Bristol prints in there by artist Trevor Haddrell; in fact I have some at home.”

Chew Valley Lake

“A beautiful spot. I’m a big fan of the outdoors and there’s nothing I like better than a day out in the sunshine surrounded by nature.”

Wapping Wharf is now growing with over 250 new homes – including one, two and three-bedroom apartments – currently being created. The new homes, which are now for sale and known as Wapping Wharf Living, a joint venture between Umberslade and Muse Developments.
