My Bristol Favourites: Tom Hovey
Tom is an illustrator who lives in Totterdown and works in Stokes Croft. He is best-known for his designs of contestants’ creations on The Great British Bake-Off.
The Park Bakery
“New owners Matt and Ellie Lean have given this long-established business a new lease of life and brought it right up to date. On Friday and Saturdays they do the best takeaway pizzas in Bristol. At the weekend you can pick up some speciality breads like sourdough or their olive and rosemary focaccia, but get there early as they’re really popular. And, if you have a sweet tooth you have to get a triple chocolate brownie. They are big, gooey and completely addictive!”

The Star & Dove
“My local for the past couple of years. A beautifully traditional dog-friendly pub with lots of cask ales on a weekly rotation. Excellent pub snacks big sausage rolls, scotch eggs and pork crackling scratchings. Open mic nights are fantastic. And you have to love the old fella that has his own chair and sits by the fire drinking Guinness, underneath a picture of him in his chair drinking by the fire.”

Chilli Daddy
“The best street food stall in Bristol and there is a lot of competition. Me and a few studio mates always try to venture out for lunch on a Friday. Although more foodie spots are appearing in Stokes Croft where my studio is there is a lot more on offer in town and especially on a Friday when the street market is on. Chilli Daddy offers a takeaway hotpot with a choice of slow cooked meats and tons of filling and noodles and your choice of spiciness. I went hot on my first visit which I have not repeated.”
Jeff the Big Issue seller
“One of the first people to welcome me to Stokes Croft when I moved out of my lonely home studio and into a shared studio in Stokes Croft was Jeff the Big Issue seller. This guy brightens up my day every morning. He high-fives and knuckle bumps every passer-by putting a smile on everyone’s face. His enthusiasm and energy is infectious and you can’t help but be in a better mood for coming into contact with him. Support your local Big Issue seller!”
Here Gallery & Shop
“When I need to take a break from work and get out of the studio, Here is my first port of call. It has an amazing array of art and design magazines from all over the world. What the shop lacks in size it makes up for in selection. Not only does it have tonnes of gorgeous magazines it has a big selection of comics, zines and art books. And the rotation of artists displaying prints in the shop is just another reason that makes this a must-visit spot for anyone in Stokes Croft.”
