These are Yusuf’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Troopers Hill

Troopers Hill could perhaps be named after the Parliamentary army, under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax, who camped on the land prior the siege of Bristol in 1645. – photo: Ellie Pipe.
“I’m a sucker for a good view and Troopers Hill provides just that. Not only is there a big old chimney from the 18th century (yes, my degree was in history) but plenty of space to wander around and admire the sunset. Home to woodpeckers, buzzards and even reptiles, it would be easy to forget you’re just outside the centre of a city.”
Goat Gully
“Located just by the Downs, the area is considered one of the UK’s top locations for rare plants with over 30 scarce species growing there. Great view: check (did I mention I love a view?). Wild goats: check. Practically in the centre of Bristol: check. What’s not to love?”
Conham River Park

The Avon Valley Woodlands local nature reserve is situated within the beautiful setting of the River Avon near Hanham – photo: Martin Booth
“Just down the road from Troopers Hill, the river provides a lovely walk plus maybe even an opportunity to swim on a warmer day. In mid-summer, the riverbank closely resembles a scene from Glastonbury’s stone circle (think teenagers, bucket hats, drum’n’bass). Whether that’s your thing or not, you have been warned.”
Crofters Rights Garden

Crofters Garden is on the corner of Picton Street and Ashley Road, on what for many years was the Magpie squat – photo: Martin Booth
“Crofters Garden is lovingly referred to as ‘the spot’ by my circle, because it’s the only place we ever go. Great pizza and friendly staff. They’re prepared for the colder months, providing decent overhead heaters. There’s also an area inside and up the stairs, but that has the look and feel of a school canteen.”
Este Kitchen

Este Kitchen promises Latin flavours, locally sourced and made with love – photo: Lowie Trevena
“I’m a Latinxphile so I’m a huge fan of Este Kitchen, a great little spot in Greenbank serving delicious South American fantastic coffee and breakfasts. Sure, the arepas might be more Instagram-friendly than the traditional arepas found in Latin America but the servings are gigantic. It can get very steamy inside so try and grab a table ‘afuera’ (see above, re: Latinxphile) if you can. Disfrutalo.”
