‘Science: kicking religion’s arse since 1859’

By Ella Fisher  Tuesday May 9, 2017

On March 22 citizens of Bristol took part in a March for Science. It aimed to celebrate how scientific discoveries have aided our daily lives and encourage support for future research.

Crowds gathered in Millennium Square for a pre-march rally and listed to some influential speakers, including naturalist Chris Packham and scientist and journalist Dr Suzi Gage.

An abundance of families, particularly young children, showed their support for science. Many children partook in the activities and attended the wide variety of science-themed stalls. There were even prizes awarded to attendees that created the best banners.

Bristol is known as a hub for creativity and artistic expression, so it was not surprising to see an impressive array of colourful, witty and amusing banners.

The winners of the Kids’ Banner Competition were two sisters: nine-year-old Martha and 12-year-old Beth Lane. Their bee-themed message and creative use of lego (pictured at the top) caught the eye of the judges.

March organiser Sophie Morgan said: “Martha and Beth’s placards are two of our very favourite kids’ placards – very original and creative – obviously a lot of effort on Beth’s part with the ‘building’ of hers and as wildlife film-makers, Ruth Peacey [fellow march organiser] and I were very touched by Martha’s use of social insects to prove her point.”
