Designing a Typeface As Unique as Bristol

By Hannah Cornford  Thursday Apr 25, 2019

Look a little closer. Just like the city it celebrates, there’s more to Better Bristol’s custom-designed font than first meets the eye.

The brand new font was a labour of love, created from scratch by Workbrands’ Creative Director Tom Ovens.

The brief? To “celebrate and enhance the creativity, diversity and independence of Bristol”. No mean feat! Tom set out to create a family of characters that each had a sense of individual identity, a creative edge but also ensure that they worked well all together and as a brand.

Better Bristol is all about collaboration: bringing businesses together to help shape our beautiful city through a set of social impact initiatives. The font needed to be just as recognisable as the Bristol24/7 brand, but entirely individual in its own right, to reflect the diverse network of members, friends and partners it represents – including businesses, community groups and individuals.

Ben Wright, Managing Director at Bristol24/7 said: ‘Workbrands have their roots firmly planted in Bristol and share our passion for cultivating community in the city we’re proud to call home. We couldn’t be happier with the brand they have created for Better Bristol.’

Bristol24/7 is looking forward to the launching our next project with Workbrands and fellow collaborators Out of Hand, in the form of a wider campaign celebrating all that Better Bristol does in the community. Watch this space for a series of eye-catching posters in your community very soon.
