How one Bristolian is dismantling barriers and bias in the workplace
In a countdown to the COP-26 conference in November, the Global Goals Centre in partnership with Bristol24/7 is celebrating the work of a local hero every week.
This week the sustainable development in focus is around decent work and economic growth and the Bristol hero who is dismantling barriers and bias in the workplace is Mo Ali.
Having fled from war-torn Somalia aged just 5, Mo arrived in Bristol and has since made a real name for himself.
is needed now More than ever
Aged 25, Mo has become an accomplished poet, public speaker and is a Youth Coordinator for Babbasa, the award-winning youth empowerment social enterprise based in St Pauls.
The eighth gang is an important one, where Babbasa’s 2020 Bridge to Equality report found that young people in Bristol’s ethnically diverse and low-income communities have high levels of ambition, with 60 per cent knowing what career they wanted to pursue. However, only 19 per cent of young people knew what they needed to do to achieve their professional aspirations.
Mo’s work encourages, educates and inspires young people across Bristol to the importance of self-development and cultural inclusion.
He has worked with over 12,000 students across 20 different schools and not only seeks to make young people their most confident selves but also to dismantle the barriers and biases that exist within Bristol’s institutions and workplaces.
“Ultimately what we want to do is help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and communities from lower-income households to get either the job of their dreams, pursue their academic career and otherwise get the opportunities that they would not have,” said Mo.
You can support Mo and Babbasa by signing up for the Youth Empowerment Programmes. Get involved and help Bristol become a leader in dismantling barriers and bias in the workplace.
Bristol24/7 is teaming up with the Global Goals Campaign to host the Bristol24/7 Presents: How Bristol can become the first net-zero city. The panel event will have experts from the Global Goals Centre, TLT, the Black Green ambassadors, and The Future Economy Group.
