‘It was so much fun to cook with other people’
During the month of June, Bristol24/7 will be sharing a closer look at what the young chefs have been up to since the Autumn Feast last November as we gear up for the Summer Feast in partnership with Square Food Foundation and Bristol Food Connections.
Josh Long, aged 16, is a former student at Community Special School, Three Ways. Josh started his food journey from a young age, taking part in Kids Simple Suppers cookery classes led by Square Food Foundation. Alongside school where he completed his food exams to the highest standard, Josh undertook work experience at 3 Cafe and Kitchen, Bath.
Josh was the youngest budding chef to take part in Bristol24/7 and Square Food’s young chef programme, culminating in the inaugural Autumn Feast at Paintworks Events Space in November 2017.

“I hadn’t done anything quite like it before,” Josh says.
“It was great to cook alongside others and learn from the top chefs. The night itself was intense at points but intense in a good way. It was amazing to cook for so many people (all 200 of them to be precise). I didn’t imagine it would come together the way it did. I felt so happy at the end of the evening.”

Bristol24/7 also caught up with Josh’s former teacher at Three Ways School, Rosalie Forde who stressed the importance of bridging the gap between the safety of school and the wider world.
Since the Autumn Feast Josh has been utilizing his skills on a sailing ship. Over seven days Josh cooked for eight people from the ship galley. He was most proud of the roast he rustled up on the waves.
“I really enjoy cooking for others and can’t wait to do it all over again for the Summer Feast”.
