Support women seeking asylum in Bristol

By Safiya Bashir  Tuesday Oct 19, 2021

It’s week 16 of a campaign launched by The Global Goals Centre celebrating people in Bristol taking positive action to help tackle poverty, inequality and climate change.

In the campaign, in collaboration with Bristol24/7, every week celebrates a local person who is doing inspiring and impactful work around one of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This week, the focus is on the 16th SDG, which aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

A new hero is revealed every week in the countdown to the major climate conference, COP-26, being held in Glasgow in November.

This week, our local hero is Layla Ismail, who has worked tirelessly in Bristol as the development manager of Refugee Women of Bristol, a charity that works in solidarity with women seeking sanctuary. Layla is also an anti-FGM activist.

“It’s very important that we help women to know their rights and access justice in our society. We help women who are refugees and asylum-seeking communities to understand female genital mutilation so they can access appropriate services in Bristol,” said Layla.

“We help women to settle, recover, rest, get peace and be safe in our city.”

If you want to take action and support Layla’s inspiring work, you stand against the hostile policies from the government towards those seeking sanctuary in the UK. Here is a list of actions from the Bristol City of Sanctuary for you to make Bristol a more welcoming place for people seeking sanctuary here.

Global Goals Centre, an education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol and creative agency Tusko, to create this campaign, which is supported by Bristol City Council and the Bristol Climate Hub.
