The Bristol hero championing women and addressing gender inequalities
As part of the G17 campaign, the Global Goals Centre is celebrating a new local hero every week for their work to tackle poverty, inequality and climate change.
The campaign has been carried out in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), where a hero is based on one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Previously, we have celebrated the work of Nick Ballard, Wendy Baverstock, Dan Bourton, and El Walker. All local people that have been working hard to tackle issues from hunger to disability rights.

For week five, the focus is on gender equality – and our hero is Tara Miran.
Nominated by Bristol Women’s Voice, Tara has been committed to empowering women in local Bristol communities.
“I’m surprised to be nominated as a hero,” said Tara.
“There are countless women before me and beside me who are doing incredible things for gender equality, and they deserve this award daily! But I am very thankful and appreciative to win this award, particularly as a Kurdish woman and a woman of colour, the recognition is wonderful.”
As part of her work to champion local women, Tara will make sure to talk to women from the community who are isolated to find out about their aspirations and barriers and was a real champion for them and their issues.
She also set up a group for Kurdish women and is a very powerful advocate for her community. She combines her commitment to advancing women, community gardening and encouraging health and wellbeing with raising three young daughters.
On what the main obstacles are around gender equality in the city, Tara said: “Women are often left out in decision-making levels, as we don’t have a seat at the table.”
“This is particularly a problem for us Black and Minority Ethnic women, we need representation and diversity on all levels in society. Decisions should not be made about us if they’re not made with us.”
“Ultimately, all we’re asking for is equality. We’re asking to be understood, to be heard because without a woman, society is nothing” – Tara Miran, our local hero for Gender Equality.

As someone who has done amazing work around gender equality in Bristol, Tara shares advice on what we can all be doing to support the cause.
“I’d encourage everyone in Bristol, especially those at decision-making levels and on trustee boards, to reach out to women and ensure we are offered a seat at the table and opportunities reach us all equally.”
“Inequity in access to opportunities, progression, participation and training are massive barriers for women, especially women of colour, so if women are focused on and involved, we can move forward together as a more fruitful and fair society.”
The Global Goals Centre is an education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol and creative agency Tusko, to create this campaign, which is supported by Bristol City Council and the Bristol Climate Hub.
A series of 17 short videos, one for each of the 17 Global Goals, are being released from Tuesday 6th July. Each one highlights a Bristol hero who is doing something inspiring to help reach that Goal.
