The need for sustainable communities in Bristol
It’s week 11 of the #Bristol17 campaign and this week the focus is on building sustainable communities.
The Global Goals Centre’s campaign, in collaboration with Bristol24/7, celebrates a different Bristol hero every week in the countdown to the major climate conference, COP-26, to engage a wider audience and highlight the relevance of these issues to our city and our daily lives.
The local hero is doing incredible work around sustainable heroes is Ben Carpenter, the founder and lead youth and community worker for Grassroot Communities.
is needed now More than ever
Ben was nominated because thanks to his successful work over the years in supporting young people and communities to be the changes they want to see across South Bristol and beyond.
“In order to develop sustainable communities we need to invest in everyday people and following conversations and consultation we have developed the Grassroot Activators Programme to do exactly that,” said Ben.
“We support communities to be the change they wish to see. People should care about what we’re doing and what many other people are doing in the community because there’s an absolute need for communities to be supported by professionals with lived experience, skills and knowledge.”
Grassroot Communities is an organisation that tailors and delivers youth and community work projects based on the wants and needs of local people.
The GAP programme enables young people to, learn valuable life skills that support them to thrive so they can grasp future opportunities in volunteering, apprenticeships, employment and education.
Supporting young people from marginalised communities to engage and reconnect will mean they will be more likely to look after the planet in the future and be inspired to explore working in the predicted future green economy.
Global Goals Centre, an education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol and creative agency Tusko, to create this campaign, which is supported by Bristol City Council and the Bristol Climate Hub.
