Man disguised as octopus in Bedminster pub predicts England will win Euro 2020

By Martin Booth  Friday Jun 11, 2021

A newspaper featured as part of the latest mural on the outside of the Three Lions pub looks into the future.

The Bristol Post front page of July 11 has the headline, ‘England winners’, and when Harry Kane lifts the trophy at Wembley Stadium he will have a man in a Bedminster boozer dressed as an octopus to thank.

‘Nobtopus’ has made a return to the Three Lions on West Street in time for this year’s tournament having made his name with his predictions at the last World Cup.

The eight-tentacled tipster now has a reputation to live up to, having had a success rate of more than 80 per cent in 2018.

“We need to get some feel-good back into the country and back into Bristol,” Three Lions landlord Sean Donnelly told Bristol24/7 on the day before the tournament was due to kick off.

“I’m excited myself. God knows how many Euros and World Cups I’ve presided over here. But all of a sudden now we’ve put some flags up, we’ve just done the front of the pub and my little octopus guy is ready.”

Nobtopus predicts the winners of games by placing a tentacle on a nation’s flag.

“His prediction record last time was unbelievable and so’s he’s doing it again. It’s all just great fun.”

The optimistic octopus’ prediction that England will win the Euros is currently shared by Sean, who came fifth as an independent candidate in the Bristol mayoral elections in May, winning almost 5,000 votes.

“The atmosphere here when England play is electrical,” said Sean. “It’s absolutely banging… Everyone parties, everyone is singing off the same hymn sheet.

“England always give us this great hope, which slowly sort of drizzles away it seems. But our hopes and aspirations are there.”
