‘Take a different direction in policing’
The EU referendum has captured the public imagination, and quite rightly so. However, before then we have local council and Police and Crime Commissioner elections which may not offer the same opportunity for national change.
However, for the people of Avon and Somerset, they offer the opportunity to take a different direction in the policing of our communities. I am standing because I think the good people of the South West deserve the opportunity to have a person committed to representing their interests and working with police forces across the region to deliver outstanding levels of service.
I may be standing under the UKIP banner but the key part in the name for me is the word “Independence”. UKIP local representatives are free to stand up for their constituents, free from the bounds of the party whip. My focus will be upon the policing requirements of the local community.
is needed now More than ever
I stand upon a platform supported by five pillars:
1. I will ensure that ALL crime is recorded and improve the ease of reporting, which takes the front line police off the street for far too long. I saw this first-hand while out with Trinity Road police station staff, where one crime took 5 hours to report and took police off the streets.
2. I will be visible, approachable and alert to the communities that we are supposed to serve. We understand that investment needs to be made in locally appropriate initiatives such as the handling of people with mental health challenges.
3. We will guarantee transparency and scrutiny through accountability and performance reporting of the police in compliance with an agreed Local Police & Crime Plan.
4. I will work closely with partners to stop people with mental health issues being detained in police cells.
5. I want to see more police presence in rural areas. As a farmer myself I know the cost of rural crime and the ever present threat is presents.
If you elect me, I want to make sure my term will be one of transparency and community involvement. As a result, I have signed up to a standards checklist on public life, which promotes high ethical standards.
Aaron Foot is a farmer and the UKIP candidate for Avon and Somerset Police Commissioner.
