How to Select the Right Mastic Sealant for Your DIY Home Project

By Sponsored Feature  Thursday May 11, 2023

So you’ve finally decided to embark on that DIY home project? Chances are that, at some point, you will need to fill some gaps or cracks. This can be in your windows, doors, gutters, floor, or shower area. And in such a case, you will need a good mastic sealant. The sealant will be quite helpful in filling the gaps, and it will also give you a professional-looking finish.

But where do you start in the selection process, or how do you even determine the right sealant? We have some pointers that can help.

Understand the Different Types of Sealants
When it comes to caulk and mastic sealants, the basic starting point is understanding the different types. Naturally, sealants used for internal applications may not be the most suitable for harsh external conditions.

Below are some of the most common types you may need to choose from:

Silicone sealants: These are likely to be the type you’ve come across as they are quite popular, thanks to their versatility. In most cases, they are both waterproof and heat-resistant. Ideal for sealing gaps around windows and doors.
Acrylic sealants: These are water-based, so they are easy to apply, and they dry quickly. They are most suitable in areas with no moisture exposure, such as drywall.
Polyurethane sealants: These are durable and moisture-resistant and can be used in a wide range of applications. They are resistant to abrasion, so they are mostly used in harsh conditions.
Butyl sealants: These are rubber-based and should be used in areas with no exposure to UV light. They have excellent adhesion and are resistant to moisture, so they are mostly used for plumbing.

The type of sealant you select will ultimately depend on the application. For example, if you are using it outdoors, you will need an option that will withstand varying temperatures and brace UV light.

What’s the Material Compatibility?
If you are sealing wood, you may need to use a different sealant than the one you’d use for metal. As such, you may need to understand the various substrate materials, with some of the others being glass, concrete, and plastic. Most sealants may be suitable for different materials, but using a sealant specifically formulated for your type of project can prevent poor adhesion or potential damage. For example, if you are using it on windows, it will need to have expansion capabilities.

Consider the Resistance to Environmental Factors
Naturally, the sealant will be exposed to different environmental factors and chemicals during its lifetime. And as sealants are made out of different materials, they are suitable for varying environmental conditions. To get started with your sealant selection, outline the environmental factors that will be present. Is there high humidity and moisture? Do the temperatures fluctuate? Is there direct sunlight? Choosing the right sealant for the specific environment will ensure long-term performance and durability.

Check the Performance Data on the Sealant Label
Each product has its own specifications, and these directly relate to its quality as well as application. To know more about a sealant, you can check the label to get the performance data. Check the adhesion strength, cure time, flexibility, temperature resistance, UV resistance, and compatibility with different substrates. You can then compare it with other products in the same category. And since you know the project you are handling, you can use this information to get more value as you don’t necessarily need the most expensive product.

How’s the Ease of Application?
Since you are the one handling everything in the project, you may want to make it as easy as possible. This is especially considering that different caulk and mastic sealants come with different consistency and workability, and they also require different tools. Do you have a caulking gun or is it accessible? Do you need or have a finishing tool for smoothening? If you choose a product that you can handle well, this will directly influence the final seal and the efficiency of the project.
