Bristol Flyers optimistic ahead of new season

By Martin Booth  Saturday Sep 22, 2018

Bristol Flyers head coach Andreas Kapoulas is targeting silverware this year as his team prepare to start their sixth season in the top flight of British basketball.

The Flyers take on the newly formed London City Royals at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 22 at the SGS College Arena, hoping to improve on getting to last season’s BBL semi-finals.

Greece-born Kapoulas has masterminded the Flyers’ rise through the leagues, included an EBL Division One Championship, a National Cup title and winning the BBL coach of the year accolade in his debut BBL season.

The Flyers are now part of the Bristol Sport family – that also includes Bristol City and Bristol Bears – and this week plans were announced to build a 4,000-capacity home venue for the team at Ashton Gate Stadium.

“It’s a game-changer for us,” Kapoulas told Bristol24/7. “It’s a great moment for Bristol Flyers.”

He added: “Now to see what the future looks like, it’s exciting, it’s amazing and it will help us to take the next steps that we require to support our aspirations.

“We always said we want to win a BBL championship. We want want to win something. Anything else is not good enough for the organisation that we represent; if it’s the cup, the trophy or the league.

“We want to win and we want to do it right now.”

Panos Mayindombe in action against Worcester in pre-season

That winning mentality has been passed down to his players, including Panos Mayindombe.

The 29-year-old returns for his second year in the BBL, following a one-year spell with the Durham Wildcats in 2014, where he made 33 appearances for the club, averaging 7.9 points per game.

“We have had a great pre-season and Saturday is going to be a good test. I’m looking forward to it,” Mayindombe told Bristol24/7.

Asked what his personal ambitions for the season are, Mayindombe said that he wants to stay healthy following an ankle sprain that saw him out of action for half of last season.

“I would also like to improve myself on the baulk end of the court and help my team win everything this year, championship, cup and trophy.”
